Mixtape X You – the freedom to express yourself

If you’ve been following Kalai from the beginning, you’ll know that we’re fans of a good social empowerment campaign. Our latest venture is all about girl power and giving you the freedom to express yourself in our clothes – it’s “Mixtape X You”. Kalai X You is an extension of the campaign for our soon-to-be-released Mixtape summer collection, featuring fun little playsuits, cool cami tops and cute summer dresses. We’re taking the role of “brand ambassador”, but giving our gals the freedom to express herself and show us how and where they’d wear our pieces. At Kalai, we don’t believe that fashion is for some and not others, or that…

    What inspires your mixtape collection?

What would inspire your mixtape? Would it be special or memorable moments in your life? Perhaps it would be your favourite bands? Would it be the people that have passed through your life: the friendships, loves and lessons learnt? Or maybe, like me, it would be all of the above, and more. The mixtape concept is the inspiration for Kalai’s debut clothing line, which is on it’s way as we speak. It’s a collection of basic shapes made for accessorising, personalising, mixing up however you like, however inspires you. Join the Fashion Revolution

April 24, 2018 marks the fifth anniversary of one of the largest industrial disasters in human history. The collapse of the Rana Plaza complex in Bangladesh, where factory workers were crammed into structurally unsafe buildings to manufacture garments for some of the world’s biggest fashion brands, claimed 1138 lives and injured more than 2500 factory workers. The victims were mainly young women. It was the wake-up call that we shouldn’t have needed, but it became the long-overdue catalyst for a revolution. Fashion Revolution Week begins April 23 and has in the five years since its inception by UK fashion designers, Carry Somers and Orsola de Castro, become the largest fashion…

For the Love of the Ocean

Kalai is on the move! We’re road trippin’ from Sydney all the way to sunny Byron Bay for the surfing and sustainability focused Byron Bay Surf Festival. We’re really excited about meeting and learning from like-minded eco-warriors and their businesses, seeing some awesome surfing and rockin’ performances. There are few better ways to cleanse the soul and calm the spirit than spending time in the big briny blue, more than three million surfers know this. But for a sport that relies on the power and beauty of nature, its eco-footprint is large. With a fair few million people who love spending time with nature, it’s awesome that festivals like BBSF…

    Fringe festival

Anyone who has even cast a cursory eye towards New York Fashion Week will have received the message loud and clear that fringe is in. It’s having another moment for spring/summer 2018. In fact it’s been having a moment on catwalks for the past few years, but fringing is hottest right now. “There’s something festive and faintly subversive about fringe”, writes Ruth La Ferla in the The New York Times, and she’s not wrong. Fringe has been worn for centuries, so it’s only to be expected that it holds sway with various facets of society. In ancient Mesopotamia (modern-day Iraq), fringe was worn by men and women on shawls and…
